For Valentine’s Day this year I wanted to find an easy way to add some holiday flair to some homemade sweets. While I usually tend to get crafty with intricate recipes, especially for holidays, sometimes I want to make something that’s just sweet and simple. I found my perfect balance when I made a batch of adorable Chocolate Cookies with Chocolate Hearts!

In my Valentine cookie recipe, I started with simple yet scrumptious chocolate cookies. Then I just topped them with some easily-made red chocolate hearts and that’s all it took to make some enchanting, melt-worthy Valentine treats!

Now I really love this particular chocolate heart process because it’s super easy and quick to do and there are no molds required! Yep, you heard that right. You can make Heart-Shaped Chocolates Without a Mold! All you need is some common baking equipment and you can whip up a batch of these chocolate hearts easily.

These cute little chocolates are perfect for adding a little magical touch for decorating cookies, cakes, cupcakes, or just as an extra sweet treat to put in the kiddo’s lunch boxes! Whatever you want to make to celebrate this Valentine’s Day, these homemade chocolate hearts are sure to make it even sweeter!

To make heart-shaped chocolates without a mold, all you need is: red candy melts, a spatula, a piping bag and tie, a baking sheet, parchment paper, and a heart template. First, melt the candy melts in a candy melt pot or microwave. Then, carefully pour the melted red chocolate into the piping bag and close it off with a tie. Lay the heart template on a baking sheet and cover it with parchment paper. Cut ⅛ inch from the tip of the bag and trace the hearts onto the parchment paper with the melted chocolate. Chill the chocolate hearts for 10 minutes before using.

How to Make Chocolate Hearts Without a Mold!

Now let’s talk about my ridiculously easy process for making these Valentine chocolates. This process is super simple to follow along with so anyone can do it. You can even bring the kiddos in and let them have fun with this family activity as well! Here’s how I make heart-shaped chocolates without a mold:

    1. First, pour the Red Candy Melts into the Candy Melting Pot.
    2. Melt them while continuously stirring with a silicone spatula.
    3. Next, position a piping bag inside a tall glass, and grab a piping bag tie.
    4. Then, carefully pour the melted red chocolate into the piping bag.
    5. Afterward, remove any air bubbles from the bag and close it off with the bag tie.
    6. Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Slide the heart template under the parchment paper.
    7. Cut ⅛ inch (or more, if needed) from the tip of the chocolate bag. Trace the hearts on the parchment paper with the red chocolate.
    8. Lastly, put the tray of hearts in the fridge to chill for 10 minutes.

    Alternative Chocolate-Melting Method

If you don’t have a nifty candy melting pot in your kitchen collection, here is a simple microwave melting method that will work for anyone!

How to Melt Candy Melts in the Microwave:

    1. First, pour the candy melts into a heat-safe bowl or silicone measuring cup.
    2. Then, heat the candy melts in the microwave at 50% power, or on a defrost setting, for 1 minute.
    3. Next, stir the candies thoroughly.
      1. Use a towel or an oven mitt to protect your hand from the heat when handling the bowl or cup.
    4. Then, continue to microwave the candies at the same low setting in 15-30 second intervals, stirring in between each interval, until the candy is almost melted.
    5. Finally, let the candy sit for about 1 minute to let the residual heat take care of any small unmelted pieces of candy leftover.
      1. If you try another interval of cooking at this point, the candy could overcook and burn so it’s better to let the candy sit and take care of itself.

    Storing Chocolate Hearts

To store homemade chocolate hearts: transfer the hardened candies to an airtight container, in between layers of wax paper to keep them from breaking or sticking together. Store them either in the fridge for 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Always mark the date on the outside of the container to keep up with freshness.
